Chapter 3 Change to Come
Duncan got dressed and drove past Courtney's house, hopping that she would be sitting on the front porch reading another book. Unfortunately she wasn't and neither her mother nor father's cars where in the driveway. Duncan pulled out his cell phone for a second time and called Courtney, only to reach her voicemail. Duncan stared at her house before finally taking off down the street.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Courtney turned from her bedroom window and looked at her cell phone that lay on her made bed, '2 missed calls'. She knew that what she was doing was messed up, unnecessary even, but she couldn't help it. She didn't feel the same and she didn't know who to tell or who to talk to about the whole situation. So what she had avoided Duncan's calls and didn't get a ride to school, she'd walk, she was already late.

Courtney thought about calling Bridgette, but she didn't want to make her late either, then she thought about Gwen, she usually was late because she picked up early hours at the coffee shop that was on the way maybe she could get a ride from her, or would that be too weird? She decided just to call her up and ask anyways.

"Hey, Gwen?" Courtney called out into the receiver of her cell phone.

        "Who is this?"

        "It's um Courtney."

"Oh where did you go this morning?"

Courtney couldn't tell her the truth not yet and it would be weird, she was Duncan's step sister, it would just make things awkward. "I uhh had to get home I left my books there."

        "Oh."

        "Are you at work?"

"No I didn't go in today I'm at home. If they let me get to school late because of work I might as well just tell them that I was at work, no big deal I'm only missing gym."

"True, I was just wondering um—" Gwen cut her off.

"If you could get a ride?" She laughed.

"Um yeah, that is if you don't mind." She said awkwardly.

"Of course I can. And don't worry I won't go and tell Duncan."

        "Um I—" Courtney stuttered

"It's okay Court, I know you're avoiding him. I won't say a word" Gwen laughed a little I'll be there in a minute so be ready."

Gwen made it to Courtney's house just as Courtney locked the front door. Courtney hopped into the passenger's seat beside Gwen and placed her backpack on her lap along with a Mass Market Paperback copy of Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult.

"Courtney," Gwen said as she pulled away from the curb and drove down the street. "You can tell me anything, I'm not going to run to Duncan and tell him something if you don't want me to. Whatever it is you can tell me."

"Thank you, I just, I don't know what to say I."

"You don't need to say anything if you don't want to."

"I know I just don't think I feel the same way that I used to."

"What's wrong with that? If people didn't change, where would we be, were would technology be. People change overtime just like what's on TV and if our ideas and personalities didn't change nothing else would, we need to change in order for everything else to change."

        "Thanks."

"No problem. So which class are you going to?"

"English I already missed the first period of that class. I sure my teacher won't be too happy about that."

"Make up some excuse. Like, there was an accident down the street from your house and you had to be the witness for the cops. Or something."

"You're good at that." Courtney smiled.

        "I've had some practice."

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Biology class was third period, everyone got seated and Duncan walked in just before the bell rang. He was usually late to most of his classes but he had biology with Courtney. He wanted to get there as soon as possible so that he would know that she made it to school. Sure enough she sat in her seat, front row right beside Bridgette and sitting right behind her was Gwen.

Duncan took his seat in the back beside Harold the school nerd and on the other side of him was Heather the school's drama queen; it couldn't get any worse than this. But he was wrong their teacher had just passed out permission slips to a field study.

"This month we will be doing our annual field study. Considering this is the last semester, I've decided to make this one a little more fun than the others." Mr. P, announced.

Field studies were never fun they were always loads of work and after doing all that work you had to write an essay.

"This semester you won't require an essay as long as I see your work and this time we will be going out on a camping trip for the whole weekend!" The class started whispering amongst themselves about the idea of camping out for a field study and that they wouldn't have to write an essay. "So everyone get your papers signed and hand them in tomorrow, we will be leaving on Friday morning so that also means all of your teachers will need to sign you out as well."

After another period of biology it was time for lunch, Duncan jumped out of his seat as soon as the bell rang and he followed Courtney to her locker.

"Court!" Duncan called over the loud students in the hall. "Wait up!"

Courtney didn't stop walking until she got to her locker. "What is it?" she asked Duncan, trying not to sound uninterested.

"Where did you go this morning?"

"I had to get something at home and then my mom brought me to school." She lied.

"Hey, you know I would have brought you home to get that."

"I know but I didn't want to be late and it's fine."

"Do you want me to bring you home?"

"No, I, I'm staying after I need to finish a project."

"Hey is something wrong with you? Was it last night? I didn't mean to push you into anything you know that right?"

"Duncan no, this has nothing to do with last night. Last night was great, never better." Courtney smiled weakly and then kissed Duncan. "I'll see you at lunch."

Duncan walked away and noticed Bridgette and Gwen beside her at their own lockers.

"Never better, we both know that was a lie." Gwen said looking at Courtney.

"What was I supposed to say?"

"Listen if you aren't feeling the same way that he feels about you then you have to tell him Court, you can lie to him." Bridgette said jumping into the conversation.

"I'm not lying, I'm you know. It's just a white lie nothing big." Courtney frowned a little.

"Courtney, what is going on with you?" Bridgette asked concerned.

        "It's nothing."

The three girls walked into the cafeteria, heading to their original table, when Courtney noticed something, Heather was sitting alone again.

"Girls, uh get your lunch I'll be back in a minute." Courtney said to Bridgette and Gwen, who gave her a nod and headed over to the lunch line.

Courtney walked to heather's table and sat down across from her and grabbed her packed lunch from her bag. She pulled out her Pb&j and began to eat.

"What are you doing?" Heather asked in shock, she was eating a salad from the school's salad bar.

        "I'm eating with you."

        "I didn't choose that option."

"Well I'm not going to let you eat by yourself, and don't start, they are not coming back. They are done with you." Courtney was being blunt.

"Well, I don't want to sit with you, or them." She said motioning over to Courtney's table.

"I'm not leaving." Courtney said and when Heather didn't answer she changed the subject. "So are you going on the field study?"

"I have to I won't let myself get anything below a B+" Heather answered as if she were talking to a friend.

"Who knew you cared so much about grades?" Courtney laughed.

"I always have I just don't make it obvious like you do."

        "What's so bad about that?"

"You just, you make yourself look like the teacher's pet it's annoying."

"Well I have my friends and they don't seem to think that."

"You try too hard, you over obsess."

"Why do you care so much?"

        "I don't."

"Heather, you're talking to me like a friend."

"You aren't my friend, you can't be my friend."

"Why not? Is it because you can't push me around." And just as Courtney finished her sandwich the bell rang for 5th period.

At the end of the day Courtney met Bridgette at her locker.

        "Where's Gwen?" Courtney asked.

        "She's working till six."

"Oh, um you wanna come over?" Courtney.

"Sure I'm not bringing Geoff home so you don't have to cover up about that project you're supposed to be doing."

        "You heard about that?"

        "Yeah I did."

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Bridgette parked in front of Courtney's house and they walked in. They grabbed Vitamin water's from the fridge then headed up to Courtney's room. No one was home and that always made the big house seem so empty. Once they retreated to Courtney's room they threw their bags down by the door and Courtney threw herself onto her bed letting out a long sigh.

"I need to tell you something" Courtney said.

"What?" Bridgette asked, she was sitting cross-legged on the computer chair as she logged on to Courtney's computer.

Courtney sighed again and opened her mouth to talk, but words weren't coming out she ran over to the trash bin in the corner over her room and threw up her lunch. "Bridgette I think I might love Heather!"
